On 2015's No No No, Beirut leaned a bit into boppy electro-pop, stepping away somewhat from the lush, horn-rich ballads the band had found a home in. The result was by no means a bad record, but a less memorable one. 2019's Gallipoli feels much like the album No No No could have been--not a retread of the same reliably lovely formula, but an advancement of it.The electronic elements remain, but not at the expense of the band's bread and butter. Gallipoli is a little lighter and a little brighter than its predecessors. It summons an ethereal calypso vibe, but it's still evocative and majestic. Its trumpets soar, its drums march, and frontman Zach Condon's tender baritone warms you. From the very opening notes of the album, you can sense the emotions Beirut will invite you into: comfort, euphoria, curiosity. The tracks are masterfully organized, weaving their trademark exultant orchestral pop along with strange and charming instrumental interludes. And like much of the band's catalog, they leave you less with standout singles and more with moods. Everything on here is equally good and capable of satisfying listeners. On Gallipoli, Beirut has proven it can both evolve and retain the magic that made the group great.
