This a great blues album. "Hooker N Heat" is a double disc collection, the first disc is John Lee Hooker accompanying himself on electric guitar. On the second disc he is tastefully accompanied by the west coast blues rock band Canned Heat. On so many of Hookers early studio recordings "The Boogie Man" was forced to work with studio musicians who didn't recognize the genius of his groove based, somewhat unpredictable, and idiosyncratic style. Often you would hear the band play chord changes that they thought should be there rather than following what John Lee was actually playing. This match up, with a popular white blues rock band of the time, may have begun as marketing ploy but turned out to be a match made in blues heaven. The talented young musicians in Canned Heat, accomplished bluesmen in their own right, obviously respected John Lee Hooker and recognized the value of his unique style. Likewise Hooker seems to genuinely enjoy playing with these young bluesmen, especially the late great harp man Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson. This album captures the essence of what happened when two generations of American blues musicians got together for a jam in 1970.
