Description
Originally released in 1977 on WEA Brazil, Carlos Dafé's Pra Que Vou Recordarstands as one of the most essential documents of the Black Rio movement — a short-lived but seismic cultural moment in which Rio de Janeiro's Black working-class communities embraced American soul, funk, and jazz and fused them with the deep roots of Afro-Brazilian music. Known as O Príncipe do Soul (The Prince of Soul), Daféwas already a respected figure in the Brazilian music scene before this debut solo album, having collaborated with Dom Salvador on the landmark 1971 record Som, Sangue e Raça and contributed songs to numerous artists across the MPB spectrum.
The album is a masterclass in warmth and sophistication. The opening track De Alegria Raiou O Dia bursts with euphoric Arp String Ensemble and Moog synthesizers, while the title track Pra Que Vou Recordar O Que Chorei — a samba-soul gem written by Dafé himself — became one of the most beloved Brazilian soul recordings of its era. Throughout the record, Dafé's arrangements balance tenderness and groove with remarkable precision, bolstered by the brass power of Banda Black Rio, the silky Fender Rhodes of Cristóvão Bastos, and the production direction of Liminha. Now reissued by Jazzybelle Records, this LP brings a long-overdue second life to one of Brazil's most cherished soul albums.
