which speed was the name of the game before thrash evolved and became the juggernaught it was. Now looking back on that new and exciting time in the world of metal one can easily forget the more classic efforts for the more commercially acceptable ones. Heavy Metal Maniac, the debut album from our friends Exciter from Canada. The album calmly starts off with a wind gust on the track "Holocaust" which in turn leads into the track "Stand Up and Fight". This track is obviously influenced by punk and by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal(NWOBHM). I can hear a lot of Motorhead influence in this band. The title track is a decent speed metal song, its not my favorite off the album but it isn't the worst. "Iron Dogs" another track with a large degree of NWOBHM influence from the melodic riffing and drum patters to the lyrics, its a good track. "Mistress of Evil" starts off a lot like Voivoid's "Blower" well the other way around since this album came first but still the drum intro for both songs are the EXACT SAME. This track is an all out trasher with some of the best riffage and drumming on the whole album. Not to mention, this song has some of the best descriptive lyrics on the whole album as well. "Under Attack" another Motorhead influenced song, can you say Overkill? Any way, the double bass is superb on the intro, and the solo is my personal favorite off the whole album. "Rising of the Dead" Think of a speed metal version of a Slayer song to a degree, not really heavy but full of speed and some pretty dark lyrics for this band. "Black Witch" a good acoustic intro with ballad style vocals to start off and then boom, heavy guitars! And not to mention another great solo to compliment this great track. "Cry of the Banshee" starts off like a bomb with the drums yet again and then it sprints out the gate as a speed/thrasher with yet again another impressive solo, it might be the longest off the whole album. From the beginning to the high pitched end this is my favorite album of 1983. The speed, intensity, and solos rival Metallica's Kill 'Em All. Don't believe me? Listen to the album, break it down piece by piece, and you'll see why you should buy this album.
