Gene Chandler's first album for Brunswick, 'The Girl Don't Care', also was his most consistent. The entire record breathes a warm, thoroughly orchestrated vibe, occassionally disturbed by some mindnumbingly haunting bits of gloomy, super sad soul wailing and dito arrangements.
Blaring horns kick off the fat strut of "Nothing Can Stop Me", a shufflin' stomper that fits Chandler's slightly nervous-styled vocalizing to a tee. A subtle touch of strings and soulful backing vocals juxtaposed with that rumbling, funky drum beat give it that typical Chi-Town sound.
Curtis Mayfield's brilliant songwriting is behind the album's most poignant track as well; "You Can't Hurt Me No More" is driven by ghostly, gospelfied wails and big, baroque string arrangements. Truly the darkest moment here, and one of the most beautiful, haunting soul songs ever put on vinyl.
Carl Davis co-wrote the delightful romper "(I'm Just A) Fool for You", sporting that gritty, hypnotizingly loping groove awash with layers of brass and cascading strings, but the mood changes abruptly, yet again, as Chandler lets out an excruciatingly passionate vocal on the melancholic "Here Come the Tears". More brilliant, atmospheric backing vocals that are sophisticated yet soulful at the same time. There's almost a waltzy, lamenting beat to this heartbreaking dirge, and it all works superbly.
Far more optimistic is another stellar Mayfield original, the straight soul jam "(Gonna Be) Good Times", but Chandler gets into another gutwrenching wailing bag on the blues-drenched title-track. Listen how Chandler wrings out the line "...but meanwhile it hurts, it hurts... it really really hurts when you know the girl don't care..." I mean, ouch...
