OK, if you don't know Miles Davis, welcome! But there's just a little history you would do well to be aware of before getting this one.
This is arguably his most significant work in that it was a once and for all departure from anything he had ever done before. We're taking about one of the most popular and best selling jazz artist ever here. And this launching of the the new "electric" and "experimental" Miles, was a pretty drastic departure.
Though by modern standards it's not all that shocking, Bitches Brew really upset a lot of "traditional" jazz fans and critics as he left his bebop ways behind forever in constant search of new ways to make music. But for those of us with open minds, holy @#$%! It changed everything. Other jazz and rock music artists were just waiting for this as Miles opened the door to Fusion (Jazz- Rock- or whatever kind of music you want to fuse it with). And man, through the door they came. This album (CD in this case) changed jazz forever as Fusion albums soon began selling at the level of mainstream pop albums, and with only a fraction of the advertisement costs. But beyond all that, and most importantly, this is just incredible music.
Miles uses a lot of the compositional techniques of the the Russian "Classical" composers of the early 20th century here, concerned more with tonal painting than form and recapitulation. He fuses those influences with his new, and unique to the times, jazz approach, while the rhythm section often utilizes hard edged rock band stylings. Sometimes it's a mess because Miles wants you to see the mess. Sometimes it's violent. Sometimes its serene. Sometimes it'll make you smile. Sometimes it'll make you long. Sometimes it just shouts "Wake the @#$% up!" And when you think about it, (which I don't suggest you when you listen, just take the ride, you never know where it's going to take you to even after thousands of listenings) ain't that real? Ain't that life?
Miles said often around this time and thereafter that he didn't believe there was any such thing as "Jazz" music, that it was always no more than folk music that went out to, the folks. And Miles believed that Bitches Brew was exactly what folks were needing to hear at the time, then despite all the criticism, history has certainly proved him to be right. Bitches Brew is as unique and fresh sounding today as it was when it came out. Young folk still buy and love this work, I suspect they always will. It still screams for your right to be yourself, it still cries for those oppressed, and it still begs you to embrace life's raptures.
So, if this is all new to you and you're looking for a CD to check out the brilliant jazz trumpet virtuoso work of Miles Davis, you'll want to look to the albums before. And oh yes, you will love it. When you're ready though, make sure you get Bitches Brew. Everything will change, mayhap even you.
