While Mountain's debut album Climbing! is their most celebrated release due to the now classic status of "Mississippi Queen", their second album, Nantucket Sleighride, is just as strong and is an underrated classic. More varied than Climbing!, Nantucket Sleighride is higher on mid-tempo cerebral tracks penned by Felix Pappalardi and his wife Gail Collins and less on the heavy boogie tracks of Leslie West. The underrated Corky Laing really makes a statement here as his drumming is a highlight throughout, particularly on the wicked opener "Don't Look Around" and the cerebral title track. These tracks along with "Tired Angels", a tribute to Jimi Hendrix that is reminiscent of the Band during the choruses and "Traveling In the Dark", are the heart of the album and are all stellar. That's not to sell Leslie's contributions short as "You Can't Get Away!" is a strong track that would have fit in perfectly on Climbing! and the single "The Animal Trainer and the Toad" is a killer as well. Steve Knight's keyboard lines are also more prominent throughout, especially on the aforementioned best tracks. The remaining tracks, "My Lady" and "The Great Train Robbery", and the instrumental "Taunta", are also very good. While many may believe that Mountain were just a one hit wonder with "Mississippi Queen", Nantucket Sleighride proves that statement false and is a heck of an album.
