Sleepwalker is the sixteenth studio album by the English rock group, the Kinks, released in 1977. It marked a return to straight-ahead, self-contained rock songs after several years of concept albums.
Signing up with Arista Records following their five-year stay with RCA Records,
The Kinks made a triumphant return to commercial success and universal acclaim
with this stunning blockbuster album in 1977 that found them back in the standard
rock band outfit and back on the top of the charts. Sleepwalker highly showcase a
timeless combination of first rate melodies, complex rock and roll, astounding high
fidelity solos, outstanding musicianship, excellent high-pitched harmonic structure
textures and improvisational excellence done in great timing as this supercharged
marked the band’s return to the Top 20. Beginning with the ambient opening track
Life On The Road, the stunning track set proceeds head on with other classic hits
like Mr. Big Man, Juke Box Music, Sleepless Nights, the optimistically challenging
Life Goes On and the superficial title track, as well as other memorable songs like
Stormy Night as they perform with pitch perfect splendour and superb confidence.
Hailed as one of The Kinks’ greatest and most important achievements, what you
also get on the expanded edition of Sleepwalker are four superlative bonus tracks
such as Artificial Light, Prince Of The Punks and On The Outside, which they add
to the gracefully-remastered restoration of this wonderful album. Plus, what even
contributes to the success of Sleepwalker is the firm-handed mainstream product-
ion handled by the band and the dramatic revival of Ray Davies following his four-
year theatrical incarnation which they emphasized the album’s sprawling success.
Released at a time of tumultuous change and encouraging progress made in rock
and roll that saw the Punk Rock Movement and The New Wave Movement calling
the shots, this music period saw the band assert more control over the day-to-day
circumstances of recording by using their private facility Konk Records as it points
to the album’s success, which will remain upbeat and deeply fascinating as ever.
